Clive Shakespeare

1947 – 2012

Clive Shakespeare formed the soul/Tamla Motown cover group the Downtown Roll Band in 1968. The band split the following year, and Shakespeare formed Sherbet with members of the Downtown Roll Band and another group, Clapham Junction. Alan Sandow, Daryl Braithwaite, Garth Porter and Tony Mitchell replaced various original Sherbet members over the next couple of years. Shakespeare co-wrote a number of the band's biggest hits, including ' Summer Love' 'Silvery Moon' and 'Slipstream', before leaving in January 1976, worn out by the constant demands for fresh material and wondering where all the money had gone. He was replaced by Gunther Gorman, then Harvey James. Shakespeare remained active in the music business as a producer.
