‘Dame Stan Munro, aged 84, is arguably Australia’s oldest performing drag queen. Born in Wales, he made his debut as a child actor/performer before touring the United Kingdom, Ireland and Germany. In 1963, Stan migrated to Australia as a “Ten Pound Pom” where he discovered drag after joining the Sydney review show, Les Girls. He became their star performer and compere and in the 1970s continued with Melbourne Les Girls. After meeting him at the local gym in Kyogle, New South Wales, where he lives, I was compelled to photograph him. His portrait forms part of a growing body of portraits in rural Kyogle.’

Jodie Harris is a Yamatji and Wadjari photographer working on Bundjalung Country in northern New South Wales. Her experimental practice crosses the genres of environmental portraiture and social documentary.

National Photographic Portrait Prize 2025

The NPPP is an annual prize for Australian photographers. The year’s most outstanding photographic portrait is awarded a $30,000 cash prize and photographic equipment valued at $20,000 courtesy of our Imaging Partner, Canon Australia.
