The National Portrait Gallery acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia and recognises the continuing connection to lands, waters and communities. We pay our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and to Elders both past and present.

The Barassi

Otherwise known as the ‘Pool Cleaner’ or the ‘Porn Star’ moustache.

Actors like Tom Selleck and Burt Reynolds, it has been suggested, were partly responsible for popularising the cultivation by 70s men of these thick thatches of face foliage. It’s a fashion most strongly associated in Australia with sportsmen for its presence on the faces of numerous legends.
