Born in Germany, Dr Paul Gerber (1924–2013) studied at Sydney University in the 1940s where he was editor of the literary magazine Hermes. In 1947, he was president of the ABC Youth Concert Committee, which organised symphony orchestra concerts for sixteen to twenty-five year olds. Gerber later graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Queensland in 1966 and became an Associate Professor of Law. In 1976 he was appointed a member of the Taxation Board of Review and, from 1988 to 1999, he was Deputy President of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. Professor of Law at the Australian Taxation Studies Program at the University of New South Wales from 1999 to 2001, Gerber was then Honorary Reader in Legal Medicine at the University of Queensland. He was also the Assistant General Editor of the Australian Law Journal. Gerber died in Melbourne at the age of 89 and donated his body for medical research.
