Cao Fei

Cao Fei

Known for her multimedia installations and videos, Cao Fei is acknowledged as one of the key young artists emerging from China. She mixes social commentary, popular aesthetics, Surrealism and documentary conventions in her films and installations. Her works comment on the rapid and chaotic changes that are occurring in all facets of Chinese society. Fascinated by the world of Second Life, Cao Fei has created several works in which she is both participant and observer through her Second Life avatar, China Tracy, who acts as a guide, philosopher and tourist.  In 2007 she experimented with the creative relationship between real and virtual space; the result is RMB City - a sprawling metropolis built in Second Life which echoes China's real-life urban and cultural explosion.  The City, which continues to grow as an artistic space, gallery and community in Second Life, combines consumerism, socialism and capitalism with a unique blend of mythology to comment on a contemporary China.
