Join us in the Gallery for a conversation with artist Samuel Hodge to celebrate his newly commissioned portrait of Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales, the duo behind fashion label, Romance Was Born.
Samuel will be joined in conversation by the Gallery’s Director, Curatorial and Collection, Isobel Parker Philip. Together, they’ll explore Samuel’s creative process, in particular his playful and innovative methods of photographic collage, as well as his longstanding artistic connection with Anna and Luke and how he approached telling their story.
There is limited seating available - book your free ticket to reserve your spot. Standing room will also be available on the day.
Samuel Hodge’s artistic practice draws on a 20-year archive of material. Using photography, textiles and digital video, Hodge rearranges and recontextualises hundreds of individual portraits of friends and strangers to create expansive collage works. Since 2005, Hodge has taken thousands of photographs of Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales at work and at play, in the studio and backstage during fashion shows, and his photographic work was used for Romance Was Born’s Spring/Summer 2020 Golden Promise collection. Hodge’s recent exhibitions include PHOTO 2022, Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne; The Public Body .02, Artspace, Sydney; The Wit of the Staircase, UNSW Gallery, Sydney; and The Imponderable Archive, WerkArtz, Los Angeles. In 2017, Hodge was the Artist in Residence at Carriageworks, Sydney, and in 2019 he was awarded the UNSWAAD Cité Des Arts International Studio Residency in Paris.
