Amandus Julius Fischer (1859-1948) began his art studies in Sydney before proceeding to the Westminster School of art in London, and the Académie Julian and the Atelier Colarossi in Paris. From 1883 he exhibited landscapes and figure studies with the New South Wales Society of Artists; he worked for the staff artist for the Illustrated Sydney News, the Bulletin and the Brisbane Boomerang. He is best known for illustrating Arthur H Davis’s (Steele Rudd’s) enormously popular book On Our Selection (1899) and its sequel, Stocking Our Selection.
