Robin Nevin AO (b. 1942), actor, director and theatre administrator, is the artistic director and chief executive officer of the Sydney Theatre Company. The teenage Nevin was amongst the first intake of students at NIDA in 1959, but she left the theatre for a time to work on ABC radio and television in Tasmania. Since returning to the stage she has worked continuously in Australian theatre, acting in and directing scores of productions. Generally based in Sydney, she has worked with all state theatre companies, and spent some years with the Queensland Theatre Company and the Melbourne Theatre Company. Though she has been characterised as 'synonymous with Australian theatre', her film roles include Libido (1973), The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith (1978), Careful He Might Hear You (1983), Angel Baby (1995), The Castle (1997) and The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and she has appeared intermittently on television from Bellbird (1967) onward, recently starring in the occasional series Halifax f.p. She has won several Sydney Critics' Circle awards, including one for outstanding achievement in the theatre, and won Logie, Penguin and Sammy awards for best actress for her performance in Water Under the Bridge in 1980. She has an honorary doctorate from the University of Tasmania.
