Ralph Heimans AM (b. 1970) is amongst a new generation of Australian portraitists. He was first recognised in 1987 when, aged seventeen, he won the National Art Award. Since then he has completed a degree in Fine Arts and Pure Mathematics at Sydney University and studied at the Julian Ashton Art School. He has also received extensive private tuition in oil painting techniques. He has travelled widely throughout Europe and America, studying the works of traditional and contemporary artists. Ralph's commissioned work includes portraits, still-lives and stained glass windows. "In my portraiture I seek to communicate a deeper understanding of the nature of my subjects through the use of vivid and dramatic imagery.
