Redfern, I love you - Alan, 2012

by Ben Lawrence

National Photographic Portrait Prize 2013 Finalist

Alan Murray was taken from his family as a boy and housed at the infamous Kinchela Boys Home. Having lost their families, land and language, the men of Kinchela are undeterred in their quest for justice, acknowledgement and healing. Redfern is an inner city suburb of Sydney, characterised by the migrant and Indigenous populations that live in the area. This portrait is part of a photographic love letter to this unique suburb and its residents. This entire series has been captured through a one-way mirror. Being presented with their own reflection fosters a deeper introspection, defining the series’ almost dream-like expressions.
