Jeffrey Smart, Tuscany, June 8, 2011

by Dave Tacon

National Photographic Portrait Prize 2012 Finalist

Now 90 years of age, artist Jeffrey Smart's mind is agile even though his body no longer is. My assignment required a tightly composed portrait and although these images were successful, I felt it important to convey the artist in his environment. Here he is pictured in the sun room on an overcast day at his home in Tuscany where he has lived half his life. Now that he is unable to get to his studio each day, he spends much of his time in this room, which is bathed in light each afternoon.
