National Photographic Portrait Prize 2025 Finalist
‘This portrait features Tiwi artist Alfonso Puautjimi, a member of the Ngaruwanajirri Art Centre in Wurrumiyanga, Tiwi Islands. Alfonso has been painting with Ngaruwanajirri, which supports artists with lived experience of disability and fosters community and collaboration, since 1997. The art centre’s name means “helping one another”. The bicycle, featured in both his art and this portrait, serves as a personal inspiration to him. In 2024, one of his bicycle paintings was selected as a finalist in the NATSIAA (National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards). Captured with a large-format camera using Polaroid Type 665 film, this portrait highlights Alfonso’s quiet strength and enduring spirit.’
Naarm/Melbourne-based Tobias Titz is a photographer and educator who has worked with First Nations communities in the Pilbara, Kimberley, Western Desert, Arnhem Land, Tiwi Islands and Central Australia for over 15 years.

Voting closes Sunday 28 September 2025.
