Ita, 2019

Kirsty Neilson

Darling Portrait Prize 2020 Finalist

Ita Buttrose AC OBE is one of Australia’s most celebrated media figures. Her career spans six decades in newspapers, magazines, television and radio. Ms Buttrose was the founding editor of the ground-breaking magazine Cleo, and the youngest-ever editor of The Australian Women’s Weekly, before becoming the first woman to edit an Australian metropolitan newspaper when she was appointed Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph. This portrait needed to depict Ita’s intelligence, strength, class and importance. I wanted her to shine, so I kept the portrait clean and crisp. It pays homage to classic portraiture from the early 1900s in Australia.
