National Photographic Portrait Prize 2007 Finalist
My photographs deal predominantly with the portrait form. The starting point is a strong connection with a passing image of an anonymous subject, usually in congested areas such as train stations, concerts, agricultural shows, shopping centres or other ordinary locations. I then remove this image from the distractions of the every day and re-contextualise it repeatedly in a uniform frame. This repetition aesthetically intensifies the initial visual inspiration, and draws the viewer into a unique relationship with beauty.
Magda Keaney examines the 123 Faces project by Simon Obarzanek.
Photography is the most pervasive and popular medium for portraiture and makes a natural fit with the Gallery, being a natural extension of the Gallery's longstanding commitment to photography as a contemporary portrait medium.
