National Photographic Portrait Prize 2007 Finalist
Often I'll approach someone I have not met before to photograph them. Martin Tanneberger was such a case. He was with a group of friends and their collection of low-rider bicycles. Martin was doing some impromptu mechanical fettling on one of the bikes. As I watched it struck me how much he was the teenager in transition: still in many ways a boy yet on the cusp of adulthood. There was something vulnerable and almost fragile about him just below the edgy surface appearance. This manifested in a contemplative, faraway look as I took his photograph.
Photography is the most pervasive and popular medium for portraiture and makes a natural fit with the Gallery, being a natural extension of the Gallery's longstanding commitment to photography as a contemporary portrait medium.
