Self portrait, 2010

by Rianna Holder

Self portrait, 2010

Year 11, Aitkin College Vic
oil on canvas

This self portrait is painted from a photograph. It is in homage to the artist Sofonisba Anguissola. In the sixteenth century, Anguissola was one of the leading female portrait painters. She paved the way for women in an industry dominated by men. She was greatly revered in her time and I very much admire her techniques and skill in creating soft and gentle brushwork yet delicate and fine detail. I chose to appropriate these elements, as well as her use of monochromatic colours and composition: the body turned to the side and the head facing forward.
