New Year's Eve, 2019

Allison Marion

pigment photographic print (sheet: 30cm x 40cm)

‘The fires that swept across Victoria in the summer of 2019–20 drove thousands to the edge of the sea, where encircling flames and amber-red skies left no path to safety but by water. This photograph captures 11-year-old Finn, steady and resolute, bravely fleeing Mallacoota by boat, with his younger brother, mum and family dog on board.’

Allison Marion lives on the lands of the Bidwell (Bidawal), Gunaikurnai and Monero (Ngarigo) peoples in East Gippsland, Victoria. Her photography practice is inspired by the landscapes and seascapes of the region, and often focuses on fleeting light and candid moments.
