Hope and fear, 2025

Prue Hazelgrove

National Photographic Portrait Prize 2025 Finalist

tintype, Chromaluxe metal print (sheet: 60.0cm x 140.0cm)

‘Rav, depicted here, is a proud Indian trans man, born in Singapore, who moved to Australia for love and queer community. “It took me a long time to come to terms with my queer and trans identity while shutting down the voices in my head that say Indians can’t be queer or trans and that it’s a whitewashed thing. It’s innate for me. I was born this way and to be able to celebrate my identity along with my culture is my biggest achievement.”’

Prue Hazelgrove is a Queer Canberra-based artist living on unceded Ngunnawal Country who specialises in the 19th-century wet plate collodion process. The historical significance of this medium enables them to represent stories erased from the narrative.
