National Photographic Portrait Prize 2025 Art Handlers' Award
‘In the evenings when I drove up a small laneway off Norton Street, Leichhardt I used to often see Antonio Intili at work through his shop window. Born in Capizzi, Sicily in 1935 and a tailor in Leichhardt for close to 60 years, he appeared an elfin figure sitting on his work benchtop late into the evening cutting, stitching and pressing anything from jeans to the finest Italian fabrics. George Fetting is a visual artist and photographer based on Gadigal land/Sydney who specialises in portrait, travel and editorial photography. He describes portraiture as his ‘first love’. The subject of this photograph, Antonio Intili, sadly passed away in July this year.
The People’s Choice Award is generously supported by the Calvert-Jones Foundation, with the artist who wins the most votes receiving $10,000.
