‘In the evenings when I drove up a small laneway off Norton Street, Leichhardt I used to often see Antonio Intili at work through his shop window. Born in Capizzi, Sicily in 1935 and a tailor in Leichhardt for close to 60 years, he appeared an elfin figure sitting on his work benchtop late into the evening cutting, stitching and pressing anything from jeans to the finest Italian fabrics. Until recently, he was truly one of the very last of the original Italian immigrants to still be working, and a proud ambassador of the once thriving Little Italy that Leichhardt was famous for ...’

George Fetting is a visual artist and photographer based on Gadigal land/Sydney who specialises in portrait, travel and editorial photography. He describes portraiture as his ‘first love’. The subject of this photograph, Antonio Intili, sadly passed away in July this year.

National Photographic Portrait Prize 2025

The NPPP is an annual prize for Australian photographers. The year’s most outstanding photographic portrait is awarded a $30,000 cash prize and photographic equipment valued at $20,000 courtesy of our Imaging Partner, Canon Australia.
