National Photographic Portrait Prize 2025 Finalist
‘Mahmoud looks across the courtyard at the Flemington Housing Estate towards the building where his parents live. In a few weeks, the already mostly vacated building would be torn down to make way for new flats. On our walk across the estate, we reflected on this new reality and what it means for his family and the many other families that once called this place home.’
Basil Abubaker is a photographer based in Naarm/Melbourne whose work explores African-Australian identity through the perspectives of young African-Australians and their communities.
The People’s Choice Award is generously supported by the Calvert-Jones Foundation, with the artist who wins the most votes receiving $10,000.
