The Hon. Alex Chernov AC QC, 2019

Anne Middleton

Darling Portrait Prize 2020 Finalist

Alex Chernov is a man of integrity. His gaze is penetrating, measured and acutely observant. His roles have included President of the Victorian Bar and Law Council of Australia, Queen’s Counsel, Judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria and its Court of Appeal, Chancellor of the University of Melbourne, 28th Governor of Victoria, and deputy to the Governor-General. Alex’s outstanding contributions were recognised in 2008 with an Order of Australia, followed by a Companion of the Order in 2012. Alex is of Russian parentage – I have amplified his translucent skin using layers of opaque and transparent oil paint, conveying the complexity and subtlety of the man.
