When are you closing?

We’ll be closed to the public from Tuesday 23 April until 14 September 2019.

Why are you closing?

Our building needs a little bit of rectification work to maintain its integrity and keep the collection safe.

Can I still park at the NPG?

No. Time to pump up your bike tyres, grab a MyWay card or make friends with our NGA friends! There will be no car park access from Tuesday 23 April until late August for anyone who is not an NPG staff member or construction worker.

Will the collection be safe?

Yes. Your national collection is definitely safe. The artwork storage area will not be affected during the temporary closure.

Can I still go to the café and store?

No. Time to snap up a thermos and plan your presents now as both the café and store will also be closed until August.

I am a member of the Circle of Friends, what’s going to happen with my membership?

The Membership Coordinator is still on hand to look after you on the usual contact number and email (02 6102 7022 or The Gallery is also rolling out an extra 6 months on expiry dates to every member who is current over the closure period. You can continue to get your shop discount at the Curatoreum at the Arboretum.

Do the NPG staff get a long holiday?

We wish! It will be business as usual for staff, most of whom will be temporarily relocated to Old Parliament House. Our security and registration staff will remain in the unaffected areas of the building.

So what are you doing while you’re closed?

We’ll have a raft of travelling and satellite exhibitions, off-site events and an exciting digital program for everyone to enjoy.

Our favourite touring exhibitions will continue, with our Access and Learning team accompanying them to present tailored community and school programs around the country.

But wait, there’s more! Our videographer will be on the road with the touring shows, meeting people at regional art galleries, recording interviews and creating new mini-documentaries. These will be featured regularly on our website and social media channels. Keep an eye out for AndyCam’s Travel Portraits.
