People are inclined to see the name ‘National Portrait Gallery’ and assume that what we mostly do here is hero worship. But it takes all sorts to create a national portrait collection – good, bad and ugly; meek and powerful; famous and utterly obscure – and this selection of paintings, prints, sculptures and photographs demonstrates precisely what it is that makes portraiture a surprisingly multi-faceted genre.
