Exploring art through Visual Thinking Strategies

Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) is an inquiry-based approach to experiencing art through careful, close looking and questioning, empowering students to discuss art based on what they can see in an artwork. The goal of VTS is to encourage students to observe independently and to back up their comments with evidence through dialogue with their peers. During Day One, teachers will learn how to use VTS in their classrooms and have the opportunity to practice facilitating VTS discussions and receive coaching in the galleries of the National Portrait Gallery. Day Two involves exploration of aesthetic development, further opportunities to practice VTS discussions, consideration of image selection and an introduction to ways to assess individual student development. The VTS pedagogy connects directly to the Australian Curriculum, developing students’ knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, observation, speaking and writing, as well as increasing their capacity for Critical and Creative Thinking, Personal and Social Capability, and Ethical and Intercultural understandings.

Includes museum admission, preparatory readings, workshop materials, and drinks. Post participation coaching in your classroom can be arranged.

Recommended for teachers and museum educators of all year levels and subjects. You do not need specialist art training to use this strategy in the classroom.
