Boyd and Nolan. It's difficult to imagine the history of Australian post-war painting other than in the shadow of these two towering figures. Sidney Nolan was, of all of the painters of the second half of the 20th Century, the one who attained the greatest measure of international fame, recognition and success. For all his worldly attainments, this late self-portrait by Nolan reflects a deeply uncertain and divided self-image, a smudge of a thing, an occluded self-estimation that makes a wonderful counterpoint to the youthful Boyd of Dostoevsky and Mirambeena.
