Marcie Fairfax

Marcie Elizabeth 'Betty' Wilson was the daughter of solicitor David Wilson and grew up in Sydney's eastern suburbs. A stylish woman who moved in elevated social circles, she married media proprietor Warwick Fairfax in 1928. This, the first of Fairfax's three marriages, lasted 18 years and the couple had two children. Their daughter, Caroline (1930-2003) married Phillip Simpson in 1959 and became one of Sydney's most remarkable and generous patrons of the arts. An elegant hostess, Betty's social circle and connections linked her with many of the city's primary tastemakers of the inter-war years. Her portrait, photographed by Harold Cazneaux and styled by Adrian Feint, was featured in the April 1929 issue of The Home.
