Professional Development for teachers and museum educators

This program is a Teacher Quality Institute accredited program. Join April Phillips (Wiradjuri), National Portrait Gallery Art Educator in Residence in an interactive virtual and online professional development program. With close association to the 2019 NAIDOC theme: Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future learn how to appropriately and confidently share the stories and lived experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander subjects from the National Portrait Gallery’s collection. This program is designed to support teachers and museum educators to reinforce students general capabilities of critical and creative thinking, personal and social capability, ethical understanding, and intercultural understanding under the priority area of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Histories and Culture.

This program will be structured to create a collaborative and reflective learning environment where information, experiences and current research is shared. It will involve:

  • An online learning forum with discussion threads and access to resources. Add to the conversation - critiquing resources and sharing knowledge.
  • A live virtual connection with April Phillips (Wiradjuri), National Portrait Gallery Art Educator in Residence.
  • An online practical activity to apply what you have learnt to create a lesson plan/museum program integrating NAIDOC theming for your students. Brief feedback will be provided and encouraged from your forum peers, April Phillips and experienced Learning Facilitators from the National Portrait Gallery.

Duration:

  • Live virtual program with April Phillips (Wiradjuri), National Portrait Gallery Art Educator in Residence, 1 hour
  • Online learning forum discussion, resources and practical activity, 4 hours (to be completed pre/post the live virtual program component)
