Extended Wall Label: Sidney Myer (1878-1934), retail magnate and philanthropist, was a penniless Russian immigrant named Simca Baevski when he arrived in Melbourne in 1898. He and his brother adopted the name Myer and worked at a drapery store before moving to Bendigo, where they opened the first Myer store in 1900. The venture prospered, and eleven years later Sidney was able to erect a sophisticated American-style department store called the Myer Emporium on Bourke Street, Melbourne. As the company continued to expand, Sidney made generous contributions to cultural and charitable causes. In 1920 he married Merlyn Baillieu, from an established Queenscliff family, and their descendants were to extend the family tradition of philanthropic generosity. Myer merged with GJ Coles and Coy in late 1985; in 2006 Myer was sold to a US company, with the Myer family retaining a stake.
