Impressions exhibition launched
Step into the world of big hats, veils, lace, satin, pipes, sunshine and shimmery rain this summer at an exhibition of Australian portraits from 1885 to 1915. The works in Impressions are beguilingly familiar to us. Some are by artists not immediately recognisable; others are rarely seen works by big-name artists including portraits by Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton and Frederick McCubbin. Sourced from public and private collections around the country the large oil portraits, drawings, prints, sculpture and impressionistic sketches are remarkable for their freshness and immediacy.
The exhibition will be on display at the National Portrait Gallery from Friday 25 November 2011 to 4 March 2012.

National Photographic Portrait Prize 2012 Finalists Announced
The National Portrait Gallery would like to thank everyone who submitted photographs for the National Photographic Portrait Prize 2012.
The quality of the submissions was exceptional which made it a difficult task for the three judges to reduce the overall pool to the final forty six portraits for the exhibition. The winning portrait will be announced at the exhibition launch at the National Portrait Gallery. With the generous support of VISA, the Gallery is offering a prize of $25,000 for the most outstanding photographic portrait.

National Portrait Gallery receives Best Public Building Award
Adding to previous awards for architectural excellence, the National Portrait Gallery has received the John Holland Award for Best Public Building at the 2011 Property Council of Australia/Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards.
Previous awards include the 2009 Sir Zelman Cowen Award for Public Architecture along with a National Architecture Award for Interior Architecture. The National Portrait Gallery was designed by Sydney-based architectural practice Johnson Pilton Walker (JPW). Further Information |

1.5 million people visit the National Portrait Gallery
The National Portrait Gallery welcomed its 1.5 millionth visitor through the doors this week. Opened in December 2008 the Gallery has enjoyed higher than anticipated visitation to its permanent and temporary exhibitions. The 1.5 millionth visitor, Mr Peter Howe from Western Australia, visiting with his family, was presented with a gift by the Gallery Director, Louise Doyle. |

National Portrait Gallery Chief Patron announced
The Prime Minister’s Office and the National Portrait Gallery are pleased to confirm Mr Tim Mathieson as the new Chief Patron of the National Portrait Gallery. The profile of the Chief Patron is one which is supportive of the Gallery and its broad aims and represents the interests of the Gallery.
Traditionally, the National Portrait Gallery invites the partner of the incumbent Prime Minister to be Chief Patron of the Gallery. It is an honorary position of advocate to promote the significance and importance of the Gallery both nationally and internationally.
The Gallery is committed to improving access to and providing information about the collection which tells the story of what it is to be Australian; its identity, creativity, culture and history. |

A new series of talks will be held every Wednesday lunchtime featuring a range of speakers; artists, curators, historians and guest celebrities will present talks on key works in the Portrait Gallery's collection.
