InformationGeoffrey Rush (b. 1951), actor, was born in Toowoomba, Qld, where he was exposed to pantomime and vaudeville performances. In the early 1970s he acted in campus theatre groups at Queensland University and performed with the Queensland Theatre Company. From 1975 he spent several years at the Jacques Lecoq School of Mime, Movement and Theatre in Paris; at some point in his stage career he is said to have shared a flat with Mel Gibson. In 1998 Rush was awarded the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of the emotionally damaged pianist David Helfgott in Shine. He also won a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, an AFI Award, the New York Film Critics Circle Award and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for the role. He immediately became a 'film star' and has since commanded leading roles in Elizabeth, Shakespeare in Love, Quills, Lantana and The Tailor of Panama.
