The Headspace Project was a national secondary school student art exhibition held over ten years from 2000 - 2010. We invited school based art educators from all states and territories to work with their secondary school level students to explore a different theme each year which addressed notions of the self through portraiture. The work could be in any media and could explore the possibilities of portraiture in the broadest sense. Underpinning the Headspace Project was the belief that portraiture is a valuable, potent and relevant art form through which students can explore aspects of themselves, their community and their world as it is or as it might be.
Please explore the resources section for information regarding each of the ten Headspace exhibitions.
The National Portrait Gallery would like to thank all teachers and students who have participated in the Headspace Project. We are currently working on the development of new initiatives that will continue to build on our relationship with schools, educators and their students.
