Education Programs - Secondary

Years 7, 8 & 9

Critique and analysis of pop-culture icons and Australian identities will spark lively debate amongst students. Time is devoted to skill-development and understanding art-making techniques.

Looking and seeing in the Gallery helps students to interpret and analyse works using a range of methods
 
The art critic examines what students think about a particular work or the collection in general. Explore the ideas, subjects and stories represented by Australian artists and their portraits
 
Making portraits explores the materials and processes that artists use. Consider the coupling of artist and subject in the Gallery’s commissions
 
Photography looks at how people are represented in contemporary and historical photographs. Students create and critique digital photographic portraits
 
Perspective in portraits explores how artists frame their subjects in space. Through activities students create their own intepretations
 
Australian identities examines the social and cultural beliefs that make up identity. Is there an Australian identity?
 
Debate, investigate, question the issues surrounding a selection of portraits. Debate your position
 
All in time traces history through portraiture
 
Living values investigates how portraits tell stories about the subject’s life. What made a good citizen in the past and what makes one now?
 

Years 10, 11 & 12

Students learn about the art world as they investigate the patronage process and the politics behind art. Analysis and opinion merge and students have a chance to publish their material.
 
Writing for art’s sake develops students’ critical and analytical skills by investigating works of art
 
Authentic insights illuminates the rich variety of portraiture by representing a diversity of approach, form, purpose, style, materials and techniques. Can portraiture be defined? What do artists, critics, subjects and students think?
 
Portraits and labels investigates the content and purpose of the wall texts and labels that accompany the portraits. Students are encouraged to develop their own interpretation
 
The politics of art prizes looks at a contentious but important form of patronage. The collection includes a number of ‘winners’ and ‘losers’ of portrait prize competitions. Hear from a judge’s perspective and explore the issues through participation and inquiry
 
Art issues now reflects on contemporary artistic issues in the collection. Search out portraits that represent such issues and debate whether they are appropriate for public display
 
Patronage uses case studies from the collection to provide a rich resource for understanding the public and private commissioning process
 
Photography and portraits explores contemporary issues about representation and photography. Where does the public domain end and private begin?
 
History, people and places investigates selected historical moments by scrutinising specific portraits
 
Portraits, power and politics asks who are the leaders and do individuals have power? What do portraits tell us about how politics plays out?
 
Exhibition reviews examines the role of an art critic. Students develop and share their interpretation of an exhibition and look at ways of publishing the material
