"How a painter carries out a major commission is invariably of interest. I was privileged to work
with Olsen over a four-day period while he painted Summer in the You Beaut Country as a ceiling
for the art dealer Frank McDonald."
David Moore quoted, from Face to Face: Portraits by David Moore, 2000
Chapter and Verse in association with National Portrait Gallery
"When I came back from Europe the first time, Australia seemed so incredibly different that it
demanded a solution that was incredibly different. I thought that you had to be prepared for
the sake of truth to be terribly corny - which is the reason for that You Beaut Country thing.
The title's a satire upon what Australians call beauty. You're dealing with a new and interesting
sense of beauty that you don't get anywhere else. There's this fantastic plethora of fast-moving images
that Australians don't think of in a profound sense at all."
John Olsen quoted, In the Making, 1969
