Student Program Pre-visit information
We will be looking at a range of portraits. To prepare for your visit you may wish to discuss the following questions with your group.

  • What is a portrait?
  • What purposes do portraits have?
  • Why do we collect portraits?

A member of the Education team will contact you prior to your visit to discuss any needs or questions you may have. For pre-visit material relating to the content of your program or the National Portrait Gallery’s collection call 02 6270 8236 and visit www.portrait.gov.au. The National Portrait Gallery provides a poster pack for all visiting schools. If you require any Education resources or posters before your visit, please call to request them.

To ensure a positive and productive program we ask that:

  • You arrive on time. If you are running late please call us (02 6270 8236) and let us know. If you are going to a few sites in the day, please allow ample travel time from tne venue to the next. Ideally you should allow an hour for your program.
  • Students are divided into groups of about 15. If there is a change to the number that will be attending, please contact us so we can cater to your needs.
  • Teachers stay with groups. While at the National Portrait Gallery we ask that teachers stay with their students at all times. Ideally, one teacher to each group (of 15 tudents) is the best ratio.
  • Groups use the schools entrance. This is located underneath the stairs to the side of the front steps of Old Parliament House. A member from the Education team will meet you.
  • Students are aware that they are surrounded by works of art. We ask that students do not carry unnecessary items in the Gallery. Back packs and any food or drink can be left in the school space downstairs. We ask that students monitor their noise levels. Only pencils are allowed in the Gallery. Photography is not permitted in the Gallery.

There are no facilities for eating packed lunches indoors, there are however the National Rose Gardens across the road. Old Parliament House is a Heritage listed building; please help us to conserve this Australian treasure.

The National Portrait Gallery sees its Student Programs as a partnership with schools in developing learning experiences. Please let us know if you would like to follow up your time at the National Portrait Gallery with post-visit programs and ideas.

If there are any special needs or requirements that you have please do not hesitate to contact us and discuss these with our Education staff on 02 6270 8166.

We look forward to meeting you when you visit the National Portrait Gallery.
