Australians in Hollywood : Biographical Notes
John Truscott
John Truscott (1936-1993) was personally invited by Jack Warner to design
costumes for Warner Bros' big budget Camelot (1967), starring Richard
Harris and Vanessa Redgrave. Truscott was rewarded with two Oscars,
one for costume design and one for art direction, at the time a unique
double for an Australian. But financially Camelot was a disaster; it
wildly exceeded its budget in many departments, including Truscott's.
He would work on only one more Hollywood film – the Clint Eastwood/Lee
Marvin musical Paint Your Wagon (1969) – before returning to Australia
to forge a distinguished career in the Arts. In Melbourne he worked
on productions for the Victorian State Opera, and designed the theatre
interiors at the Victorian Arts Centre. He later directed site-scaping
for Brisbane 's Expo '88 and served as artistic director for the Melbourne
International Festival for the Arts from 1989 to 1991.
