Australians in Hollywood : Biographical Notes
John Seale
John Seale (b. 1942) worked as a cinematographer on such Australian films
as Ginger Meggs (1982) and the Nicole Kidman teen flick BMX Bandits
(1983) before accompanying Peter Weir to Hollywood to make Witness
(1985). The movie earned Seale an Oscar nomination, and he has subsequently
worked on a staggering array of major films: Gorillas in the Mist (1987),
Children of a Lesser God (1986), Stakeout (1987), Rain Man (1988),
which earned him a second Oscar nomination, Dead Poets Society (1988),
Lorenzo's Oil (1992), The Firm (1992), The Paper (1993), The American
President (1995), The English Patient (1995) – for which he won the
best cinematography Oscar – Ghosts of Mississippi (1996), City of Angels
(1997), The Talented Mr Ripley (1998), Harry Potter and the Philosopher's
Stone (2000), Dreamcatcher (2002) and Cold Mountain (2002). He has
also directed one feature, Till There was You (1991).
