Australians in Hollywood : Biographical Notes

Elle Macpherson
Elle Macpherson (b. 1963) discontinued law studies at Sydney Uni to pursue a modelling career. International recognition began with her appearances in the swimsuit edition of America 's Sports Illustrated magazine. She graced the cover of that publication four times during the 1980s, attaining a level of fame and wealth that necessitated the invention of the term “supermodel”. Her film debut was a brief appearance in Woody Allen's Alice (1990), but her first major role came in Sirens (1994), in which Sam Neill portrayed the Australian artist and celebrant of female nudity Norman Lindsay. Elle supposedly put on 14 kilos for her part, in an attempt to acquire the proportions of a Lindsay model. In the years since she has appeared in If Lucy Fell (1996), Jane Eyre (1996), Barbra Streisand's The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996), The Edge (1997), Batman and Robin (1997), Beautopia (1998) and With Friends Like These (1998).
