Australians in Hollywood : Biographical Notes
P. J. Hogan
P. J. Hogan (b. 1962) was born Paul Hogan, but adopted his present moniker
because “there wasn't room in Australia for two Paul Hogans.” While
attending the Australian Film and Television School he met his future
wife, the director Jocelyn Moorhouse. After winning two AFIs for his
early short film Getting Wet (1984) he wrote and directed The Humpty
Dumpty Man (1988), and worked as 2 nd Unit Director and script editor
on Moorhouse's Proof (1991). In 1994 he wrote and directed the international
hit Muriel's Wedding. The film won the AFI's best picture award, and
received a 15-minute standing ovation at Cannes. Hogan revisited the
marriage theme with the Hollywood hit My Best Friend's Wedding (1997),
starring Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz. The less successful Unconditional
Love (2000 – also known as Who Shot Victor Fox? ) followed. He has
recently completed work on the big-budget Peter Pan , due for release
in late 2003.
