Jane Campion
Jane Campion (b. 1954), director and screenwriter, was born in Waikanae, New Zealand and studied at Wellington’s Victoria University and London’s Chelsea School of Arts before entering the Australian Film and Television School in 1981. Her early short film Peel (1982) won a prestigious Palm d’Or at Cannes . Her first feature films were Sweetie (1989) and the New-Zealand-Australia co-production An Angel at My Table (1990), based on the autobiographies of Janet Frame. The highly successful The Piano (1993) followed – the film won Campion an Oscar for best original screenplay, as well as her second Palm d’Or. She has since made The Portrait of a Lady (1996) with Nicole Kidman, Holy Smoke (1999) and In The Cut (2003), starring Meg Ryan.
