Russell Boyd
Russell Boyd (b. 1944) was named Australian Cinematographer of the Year in 1976 for his work on the film Between Wars. He went on to photograph such Australian classics as Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), The Last Wave (1977), Gallipoli (1981) and The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) before accompanying Bruce Beresford to Hollywood to film Tender Mercies (1983). In the years since, Boyd has continued to work in Australian film – he shot Burke and Wills (1985), Crocodile Dundee (1986), Crocodile Dundee 2 (1988), Almost an Angel (1990) and Turtle Beach (1992) – while assembling an impressive C.V. of Hollywood credits: White Men Can’t Jump (1992), Operation Dumbo Drop (1995), Tin Cup (1996), Liar Liar (1997) and Doctor Dolittle (1998). He received the best cinematography Oscar for his work on Peter Weir’s Master and Commander (2003).
