Straight off the plane: William Boyd—better known as Hopalong Cassidy—had just arrived at Mascot Airport Sydney in 1954. Having given all his hats away, Boyd turned to Ern and pinned a badge onto Ern’s lapel, saying ‘You’re my deputy’.
