National Portrait Gallery/ Old Parliament House
Reflecting the breadth and diversity of Aboriginal and Islander achievement within and beyond the world of sport, this exhibition tells the little known tales of triumph over adversity. Black Gold incorporates seventy images spanning the late 1800s to the present day and encompassing over twenty different sports. The initiative of Paul and Colin Tatz, this survey is a tribute to Aboriginal and Islander athletes and their accomplishments in the face of such obstacles as racism, poverty and distance despite lack of access to education, facilities and other means of support. Black Gold further challenges narrow stereotypes of Aboriginal peoples by presenting a startling array of success stories. A Museum of Contemporary Art touring exhibition.
